Beginner's guide
Forex trading for beginners
Forex is the global market for exchanging currencies. Traders buy one currency and sell another, aiming to profit from changes in exchange rates. This guide covers the core ideas you need before placing your first trade — and the habits that keep beginners in the game.
The basics you need to know
Currency pairs
Forex is always traded in pairs, like EUR/USD. The first currency is the base, the second is the quote. If you buy EUR/USD, you expect the euro to strengthen against the dollar.
Pips
A pip is the smallest standard price move — usually the fourth decimal place (0.0001). On yen pairs it is the second decimal. Profits and losses are counted in pips.
Lots
Lot size is how much you trade. A standard lot is 100,000 units, a mini lot 10,000 and a micro lot 1,000. Beginners should start with the smallest size their broker allows.
Leverage
Leverage lets you control a larger position with less money. It magnifies wins and losses equally, which is why most new traders lose money when they over-use it.
Spread
The spread is the gap between the buy and sell price — the cost of entering a trade. Major pairs usually have the tightest spreads.
Trading sessions
The market runs 24 hours, five days a week, across the Sydney, Tokyo, London and New York sessions. Volume and movement are highest when London and New York overlap.
How to start, step by step
- 01Learn the basics before risking money — terms, sessions and how price moves.
- 02Open a demo account and practise until you can follow your rules consistently.
- 03Pick one or two major pairs and one strategy instead of chasing everything.
- 04Analyse top-down: higher timeframes for direction, lower timeframes for entries.
- 05Risk a small, fixed percentage of your account on every trade and always use a stop loss.
- 06Journal every trade — the setup, the result and how you felt — and review weekly.
Risk management comes first
Most beginners fail because of oversized trades and emotional decisions, not because their analysis is wrong. Decide your risk before you enter, never move your stop loss further away, and accept that losses are part of a working system. It's not luck — it's a system.
